West Ham sack assistant manager

West Ham United have sacked Avram Grant’s assistant manager Zeljko Petrovic with immediate effect.

A statement on the club's official website read: "West Ham United can confirm the club have parted company with assistant manager Zeljko Petrovic.

"The club would like to thank Zeljko for his efforts during his four months at the Boleyn Ground and wish him well for the future."

Petrovic lasted just four months at the club having been appointed by Grant in August, but pays the price for the Hammers’ dismal run of form, which has seen them pick up only nine points in 14 games.

West Ham were particularly poor during a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at the weekend and England beanpole Carlton Cole appeared to express his displeasure with Petrovic after being substituted.

Reports suggested that the Montenegran’s training methods and arrogant attitude did not go down well with the West Ham players.

Avram Grant would appear to be safe for now after chief executive Karren Brady suggested recently that he would ‘almost definitely’ be in charge at the end of the season.

Co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold are thought to be running out of patience, however and could force Grant out if their position in the league does not improve quickly.
