Which Irishman is the first player picked by Fergie in his all-time Manchester United XI?

It’s not Liam Miller…

It’s not Liam Miller…

There is still no escape from Alex Ferguson this week as the former Manchester United main man goes on tour to promote his autobiography.

Last night he was in Glasgow where a Q & A with the Scot took place, though he didn’t expand on any of the more controversial revelations that hit the press last week.

One question, though, did merit a mention. Ferguson was asked what player would be the first name down on his team sheet if he could pick a dream XI from his time in charge at Old Trafford. Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo, Peter Schmeichel and Wayne Rooney were all over looked for one man from Cork. No, not that man either.

“I would honestly say Dennis Irwin would be the only certainty to be in my team. I called him eight out of 10. I remember we were down at Highbury at 0-0 in the last minute when he had a bad passback that let Dennis Bergkamp score.

“Afterwards the press said you must be disappointed with that passback but I said, ‘Well one mistake in 10 years is not bad’.

“He was an unbelievable player.”

High praise indeed for Irwin.
