Dublin-based company IMC Exploration Group made the discovery and are understandably excited by the prospect of unearthing more gold.

“We have to be measured about it but it is a real gold find. It’s a very exciting project and we are confident we will have a gold mine in the area where we found this,” chairman Liam McGrattan told the Irish Daily Mirror.

The news may have people flocking to find their own pot of gold, but according to the company we should not be surprised. In the late 18th century a reported 9,000 ounces of gold were extracted in the area. IMC believe the south-east of the country in particular could be quite lucrative.

The company is also making explorations in Clare and Wexford and we are sure many locals in the Wicklow area are dreaming of riches.
