The words Athlone and Wikileaks are two words you don’t expect to see in the one sentence. But, the latest release of files has thrust a woman from the town into the spotlight.

The woman probably didn’t expect to be the focus of the scrutiny of the world’s press, but that she is… well sort of. The Westmeath Independent is taking notice at least.

At the start of the week Wikileaks began to release more boring as hell files in a desperate attempt to gain credibility and publicity. This most recent batch details files from the Texas-based inteliigence company, Stratfor. The upshot was there was very little that was in any way intelligent or even interesting.

That was until our good friends in the Westmeath Indo found out that an unnamed Athlone woman had a background check done on her when she applied for a job with a major US corporation. Interesting!

The woman was assessed on her: “character, integrity, ethics and honesty perspective”. This is James Bond style stuff so far. I hope it doesn’t get any more interesting.

No, it doesn’t. The company the woman was applying to only wanted to check her out to see if she would be a suitable employee. The banality of theses Wikileaks releases just goes to prove how pointless they are.
