Yakubu continued his unbelievable vein of form with two goals as Blackburn stunned Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
The game was expected to lift United to the top of the Barclays Premier League table ahead of Man City’s visit to Sunderland on New Year’s Day.
But it was Blackburn instead who were on the rise, climbing off the foot of the table after by some margin the season’s biggest upset.
Yakubu, who scored four against Swansea four weeks ago, took his tally to seven in his last six games with two more here, including a penalty after he himself was fouled by Dimitar Berbatov.
Those goals put Blackburn two up against the shocked favourites, but when Berbatov netted twice in the space of ten minutes normal service appeared to have been restored.
However, Grant Hanley gave Blackburn a decisive lead with ten minutes left (video below, David De Gea - look way now), and despite four minutes of specially commissioned time added on, United could find no way through – with teenage striker and possible future Ireland international Will Keane, on as a sub, having one shot blocked by Chris Samba and seeing another drive from Anderson cannon off his arse and away to safety.

Meanwhile, City can now move three points clear at the top of the table when they take on Martin O’Neill’s rejuvenated but still enigmatic Sunderland on New Year’s Day.
