Kilkenny’s 33rd All-Ireland title didn’t come without blood being drawn at Croke Park yesterday. But in a bizarre scenario it was star man Tommy Walsh who drew first blood on referee Brian Gavin.

There were a handful of schmozzle’s during the four-point victory for the Cats over rivals Tipperary yesteray and just after the mid-way point it all got a bit heated for the first time.

A number of players from both sides squared up to one another with hurleys flying about as a stray one, connected to the hand of Tommy Walsh, caught ref Brian Gavin on the nose.

Play was stopped for four minutes while the medics patched up the official’s gusher and fair play to him, he soldiered on despite looking well shaken.
