Kieran McGeeney will still be coming to terms with having been axed as Kildare boss after six years, but Conor McGregor has told him to give up the old GAA and concentrate on Jiu Jitsu instead.
Despite mounting speculation about his future in recent weeks, the decision of the Kildare County Board not to continue with Kieran McGeeney as manager still created plenty of shock in GAA circles, not least from the Kildare players themselves, nearly all of whom expressed their disgust with the decision on Twitter last night.
While it was suggested that McGeeney might be sought after by other inter-county teams in the near future, UFC star Conor McGregor advocated a different path for the Armagh native.
McGregor, who will be out of the octagon until the middle of next year with a serious knee injury, took to Twitter to encourage McGeeney to devote himself to Jiu Jitsu, a martial art that Geezer is a keen practitioner of having received a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) earlier this year.
John Kavanagh, who coaches Conor McGregor and is probably the most renowned MMA/BJJ coach in the country, described McGeeney as “probably one of the most intense human beings I’ve ever met,” a description that wouldn’t surprise anyone who has encountered him on a GAA field.
The worry for everyone in the Jiu Jitsu world is that McGeeney would be so dedicated to the cause that he would soon dominate all before him but we can’t see him giving up on the GAA just yet.
