Might we suggest that the ‘stop hitting yourself’ approach may have been more effective?

Managers and coaches in all sports try all sorts of motivation techniques to ensure that their players are tuned in and ready to go. As the cliché goes, some players need an arm around the shoulder, some need to be on the receiving end of a bollocking and some, it seems, need to be slapped in the face 13 times in 16 seconds.

In all seriousness, this video of a Japanese high school coach physically intimidating one of his players has become big news in the country and has been viewed over two million times since it was uploaded earlier in the week.

According to the Japanese Daily Press, it comes on the back of similar incidents in which young athletes have been bullied by their mentors, such as the tragic suicide of one teenager last year after being he was bullied by his basketball coach and allegations against the coach of the national women’s Judo team that he was beating his athletes with a bamboo sword.

Whatever happened to ‘Lads, will ye just go out there and enjoy yourselves?’
