Residents in Cavan town are making a big effort to welcome their Australian visitors ahead of the International Rules encounter next weekend, but we’re not sure how they’ll react to this.

The first of the International Rules tests takes place in Kingspan Breffni Park on Saturday week and ahead of the game, plenty of bunting has been hung up in the town along with about 30 Australian flags, while there are also plans for street theatre, an outdoor gig, exhibitions and family-related activities.

Put that all together and it sounds like the Aussie visitors will be given one hell of a welcome next weekend, except for one small problem that was pointed out by one ‘eagle-eyed’ local to The Anglo-Celt Newspaper; namely, that a number of the Australian flags were hung the wrong way around by, to borrow an appropriate phrase from Alf Stewart in the circumstances, a few flamin’ galahs.

A spokesperson for the Cavan County Council told The Anglo-Celt that eight of 30 Australian flags had been hung upside down in the town, with the spokesperson telling the paper that the situation is “currently being rectified”.

We don’t know how the Aussies will react to what they’ll surely perceive as a slight, but we reckon everyone would be fairly happy if those responsible were subject to the following punishment…
