Around 255,000 Snapchat users in Ireland have been affected and had their data leaked by a security breach involving the messaging service. The hack was performed by the Syrian Electronic Army, who then published the details of nearly 4.6 million users online in a huge database, in an attempt to highlight the flaws in the app’s security features.
According to the Data Protection Commissioner, they are aware that over 200,000 users in Ireland have been affected, and have had their usernames and phone numbers published online. However, the last two digits of the phone numbers have not been revealed, but users are still being encouraged to be particularly vigilant of unsolicited text messages asking for login details or any financial information, no matter who the sender is claiming to be.
The Independent is claiming that the number is even higher, and that 13% of Irish adults use the service, and may have been affected by the hack. JOE’s advice is to always be careful with your n00dz, lads.
