HB Ice Cream, the antidote to seriousness, polls the nation and launches ‘Ice Cool Commutes’ campaign with World Champion Backwards Runner Garret Doherty…

HB Ice Cream, opponent of taking life too seriously, recently revealed the results of a nationwide poll which revealed that commuting is denting the joy of summer time and is the nation’s number 1 most boring activity.

The survey coincides with the launch of HB’s Ice Cool Commutes campaign, which celebrates those who find quirky ways to inject a bit of fun and joy into their day and those who embrace unconventional modes of transport to work. Fronting the campaign is two time world champion backwards runner, Garret Doherty from Donegal.

Un-Ice Cool Commutes

HB found that Irish people rank commuting as their number 1 most boring activity. With a quarter of people spending 1-2 hours commuting daily and almost one in five spending 3-4 hours commuting daily, it’s not surprising that there are major gripes with fellow commuters.

When it came to pet peeves with other commuters, people reckoned the number one irritations were:

1.         People shouting into their mobile phones 41%

2.         Coughing, sneezing, throat clearing 40%

3.         People invading your personal space 36%

4.         Not getting a seat 29%

5.         The sweatiness and heat in the summer 19%

With nearly one third of people saying they dislike or dread the commute to work, and a massive  76% of us stuck in our cars every day dealing with the challenges of traffic, inclement weather and fellow drivers, HB, as a vocal anti-seriousness campaigner, reckons something needs to be done.

Ice Cool Commutes

As part of HB’s crusade against seriousness, later this summer, HB will showcase an Ice Cool alternative to the drudgery of our daily commutes which it will reveal in a top secret Dublin city centre location.

HB is also launching a nationwide search to find Ice Cool Commuters — those who challenge convention and embrace the most exciting, extraordinary and bizarre modes of work commuting transport. People can nominate themselves or others through HB Ireland’s Facebook or Twitter pages and be in with the chance to win a shedload of ‘Ice Cool’ prizes!

Anna Owen, of HB Ice Cream Ireland, said:

“While we may not be able to change the weather or cure hayfever, we can certainly brighten up peoples’ days with the simple pleasure of eating an HB ice-cream. We also have big plans to make Ireland a less serious place with our HB Ice Cool Commutes campaign which will add fun and adventure into the most boring part of our working day. When we do, it’ll be hard to miss, so stay tuned this summer!

She added: “We’re also on the lookout for Ireland’s Ice Cool Commuters, so for all the segwaying, skipping, sideways cycling public out there, we want to know who you are, so get in touch through our Facebook or Twitter pages!”

Garret Doherty, Two Time World Champion Retro Runner said: “As a big advocate of the unconventional discipline of retro running, I was delighted when HB approached me about getting involving in their Ice Cool Commutes campaign. Retro running is a great way of incorporating a feel-good factor to your day. Retro running has made me a better forwards runner, gives me a more efficient and tougher workout than running forward and never fails to put me and those around me in a good mood. Everyone should try running backwards at least once in their lives.”
