30 years ago today Bohemians pulled off one of the greatest wins in Irish history against Rangers

The names of David ‘Rocky’ O’Brien and Gino Lawless will forever be known in Phibsborough…

This season hasn’t been totally kind to the League of Ireland teams in Europe but that hasn’t stopped our clubs from registering some extremely impressive results also.

St Pats managing to get an away draw in Legia Warsaw and Sligo Rovers stunning victory at Rosenborg in Norway were fantastic performances and kept up the tradition of Irish teams causing upsets in Europe.

One of the great results in Bohemians’ history occurred 30 years ago today when they hosted and beat Scottish giants Rangers at Dalymount Park.

Violence on the terraces and fans invading the pitch didn’t take away from the drama on it.

The visitors led twice, thanks to goals from a young Ally McCoist and a Dave McPherson header but a brace from Rocky O’Brien pulled Bohs level.

The winner from Gyspy’s skipper Gino Lawless was absolutely sublime, raiding forward from the left wing before smashing home an unstoppable shot.

Unfortunately, Bohs were beaten 2-0 in the away leg and were eliminated but the footage from the match in Dublin is a nostalgic trip down memory lane as are the thoughts of the players that featured in it.
