Video: Argentine singer forgot the words of the Australian national anthem and winged it brilliantly

Let's hope he never has to sing Amhrán na bhFiann...

Let’s hope he never has to sing Amhrán na bhFiann…

There’s a certain pressure that comes with singing in front of a crowd of people and we reckon there’s even more pressure when you have to sing a country’s national anthem at a live sporting event.

We’ve been at Croke Park and the Aviva Stadium so many times belting out Amhrán na bhFiann with the help of the lyrics on the big screen and we often hear people start to mumble when they forget the words.

That still happens even though it’s our very own national anthem that we were taught it in school and it’s a song we’ve had plenty of practice to get it right. If you think that’s difficult, imagine trying to sing another country’s anthem in a foreign language that isn’t your native tongue.

Yeah, that’d be pretty tough and the difficulty of the task was perfectly proven by an Argentine tenor who absolutely butchered the Australian anthem.

Marcelo Zelada’s unique take on ‘Advance Australia Fair’ ahead of their ahead of their clash at the weekend had everyone, including the Aussie players, in fits of laughter.

These are the words of ‘Advance Australia Fair’ and we’ve italicised the lines Marcelo made a balls of. Wait for the epic finish though, as if nothing had gone wrong…

Australians all let us rejoice
For we are young and free
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea:
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare,
In history’s page let every stage
Advance Australia fair,
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair.

After seeing this clip, we’ve come to the conclusion that Marcelo Zelada is the real life Enrico Palazzo from Naked Gun, remember him?
