Tonight, Dundalk are going to party like it’s 1995.
The Lilywhites claimed their first title since the mid ’90s as one of the most exciting title races in modern times was settled with goals from Stephen O’Donnell and Brian Gartland finally putting Cork City to the sword.
The opening goal came early in the second half and it was scored by Stephen O’Donnell, who has spent the best part of the last six months on the sidelines with a serious knee injury but returned to the Lilywhites’ starting line-up this evening.
And boy did he make an impact…
Cork City fans might claim that Richie Towell handled the ball in the build-up, but O’Donnell’s strike from the edge of the box was crisp and true and put the hosts on the way to a famous victory, which was sealed when Brian Gartland toe-poked the ball to the net in the dying stages. It wasn’t pretty, but do you think Gartland and Dundalk will care? Not on your life…
