Video: Cian Healy and Luke Fitzgerald’s spine-tingling message about what it means to play for Ireland

“If you can belt out your national anthem and be proud to shed a tear.”

“If you can belt out your national anthem and be proud to shed a tear.”

This new ad from Dove featuring a host of rugby players from Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England will definitely make you wish you tried harder at rugby when you were a kid.

Cian Healy and Luke Fitzgerald represent the Irish and spew out motivational phrases which are designed to drive you on to be more successful. They bloody well worked because we’ve spent the last while thinking about why we try harder at sports in our pomp?

Anyway, the haters will be happy to know that the extremely likeable* Owen Farrell is present in the video and Courtney Lawes has taken a break from blindsiding fly-halves to deliver his speech as well.

To be honest, some of this is pretty cringe but we have to admit that we love the ad and it has gotten us all pumped up for the November internationals and the coming year of rugby.

On a final note, was anybody else surprised by how Greg Laidlaw sounded when he spoke? Not to say we expected a squeaky voice but we didn’t expect that baritone …

*In this case we were playing the opposites game.
