Meet the Kildare man who’s already spent €8K in his quest to look like a Ken doll

JOE

While we all want to look good, this man is taking it a step further in his aim to look like Barbie’s Ken.

Meet Damien Nolan. He’s a 28-year-old hairdresser from Kildare who has gotten numerous procedures done in his “quest for perfection.”

He began getting work done on his body two years ago and, in that time, has spent over €8000 on various procedures.

We spoke to Damien about his desire to look like Ken.

JOE: Hi Damien, have you always wanted to look like a Ken doll?

Yes. I’ve always been interested in having the perfect image and the perfection of the Ken doll.

I moved to London back in 2011 and it sparked it off. I felt that the men over there were very into looking after their appearance, surgery is [not] uncommon over there, it’s the norm.

I could start my journey there without feeling abnormal.

What have you had done so far?

I’ve had regular Botox treatments every 3 months, regular lip fillers every two months and I’ve had my cheek fillers done recently too.

In total, I have spent roughly €8500. I will continue to improve and maintain my youthful looks and will no doubt be adding to my procedures in the near future.

I want a nose job and a chin implant, but that’s not on my priority list yet. My veneers are the next big thing to do, and the maintenance of my Botox and fillers, I continue to strive for my desired perfect look.

How do you pay for all the work you get done?

I work full-time in a busy hair salon. I’m not out blowing my money on drink or cigarettes, so that’s how I spend my money.

Other people spend money in the pub. I don’t, I’d rather buy clothes and get fillers.

Some people might judge you for having work done, does that bother you?

No, other people’s judgments don’t bother me, as I understand that people have their own opinions and that’s fine.

I do not do it for other people’s approval, I do it for self-satisfaction.

Does it affect your ability to meet someone or are you already in a relationship?

Yes, I’m in a relationship and have been for the last 7 years. It has not effected it at all.

Have you had any abuse so far?

Oh god! Yes, of course I’ve had the odd stare and inappropriate comments, like “oh, look at the waxwork doll.” but I don’t let people get me down.

I’m not really interested in how they feel towards my look. Everyone is different in their own way and this is how I choose to look.

I’ll continue to have cosmetic surgery until I get to where I’m completely satisfied with the image I’ve created.

What are your thoughts on Rodrigo Alves, the Brazilian man who also aims to look like Ken?

I feel that if he has achieved his desired look and is happy in himself, well, good job Rodrigo Alves, who am I to judge? I’d be a hypocrite if I judged him.

People have probably said the same about me, only I haven’t had as many surgeries.

I’m sure he was very much aware of the high risks involved before he embarked on his quest for perfection.
