The top 20 television programmes in Ireland in 2016 have been revealed

Unsurprisingly, given the year that was in it, sport dominates the upper echelons of the list.

TAM Ireland/Nielsen have compiled a list of the top TV programmes broadcast in Ireland during 2016 with all 20 programmes on the list being shown on RTÉ.

The most viewed programme over the year was the fantastic Late Late Toy Show, which had many memorable moments, including a lovely gesture from Irish rugby star Jamie Heaslip and a singing performance from a 14-year-old which will give you chills.

Euro 2016 dominated the top 10 with no less than six entries with Ireland’s ties with France, Italy, Sweden and Belgium taking 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th spots on the list respectively.

Dublin and Mayo’s titanic struggles in Croke Park in September also ranked highly on the list with the drawn game nabbing 5th spot and the replay sneaking into 7th place.

The All-Ireland hurling final which saw Tipperary defeat Kilkenny made 8th spot with the top ten being rounded out by Portugal’s clashes with France and Wales at Euro 2016.

Brendan O’Carroll will be laughing, despite a scathing criticism from a leading British critic recently, as Mrs Brown’s Boys had three entries in the top 20.
