Listening to people talking about vitamins can feel a bit like you’ve wandered into an episode of Sesame Street. Everyone’s throwing letters around and it reminds you of being at school.

It’s easy to glaze over when people mention essential vitamins and minerals but it is important to know what you need and how to get it. Most of us know something about vitamins, even if it’s only that you should take some Vitamin C and Zinc when you have a cold.

This handy guide will give you a summary of some of the most important vitamins and minerals, what they do and where you can get them.

Vitamin A

What does it do: It’s important for healthy eyes, good skin, the immune system and general health.

How to get it: It’s found in foods that are high in cholesterol and saturated fat like cheese, milk, cream and meat. So that’s not ideal! Luckily, eating beta-carotene rich foods like carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkins or squash can also help your body to produce Vitamin A.

B Vitamins

What do they do: These vitamins make red blood cells, help your immune system, keep your nervous system healthy and help you absorb energy from food.

How to get them: B vitamins can be found in whole-grain cereals, dairy products, rice, potatoes, eggs, non-citrus fruit, meat, poultry and fish.

Vitamin C

What does it do: It helps you repair body tissue, helps protect against heart disease and some cancers, boosts your immune system and is believed to be good for colds (as any Irish mammy will tell you).

How to get it: We all know that oranges have Vitamin C but you can also get it in fruit, tomatoes and even vegetables like potatoes, Brussels sprouts and bell peppers.

Vitamin D

What does it do: It helps to regulate blood pressure, improve hormone production and help you to form strong and healthy bones.

How to get it: The sun actually stimulates Vitamin D production. However, if you live in Ireland, you can also get it from eggs and fish.

Vitamin E

What does it do: It helps your circulation and also works as an antioxidant.

How to get it: Good sources include sunflower seeds, almonds, spinach and other green-leaved veg.

Vitamin K

What does it do: It helps blot clotting, which is handy if you ever cut yourself! It also helps to develop strong bones.

How to get it: Green veg like kale, spinach, broccoli or Swiss chard are great sources of Vitamin K. So green leaved vegetables are the way to go.

Calcium

What does it do: It’s good for healthy teeth and bones but it can also help blood clotting.

How to get it: You remember being told to drink up your milk, right? There was a reason for that. Dairy products like milk, cheese and yoghurt are full of calcium. You can also get it from green veg.

Iron

essential minerals and vitamins

What does it do: It helps with muscle building, energy production and red blood cell formation.

How to get it: Seafood, liver and red meat are great sources of iron. For vegetarians, you can get it in spinach, beans, raisins and whole grain cereals and bread.

Magnesium

What does it do: It helps reduce tiredness and stress, aids healing and helps to prevent chronic diseases.

How to get it: Deep RiverRock’s Revive and Relax is a convenient source of Magnesium that you can enjoy on the go. You can also get it from avocados, bananas, green veg, pumpkin seeds and dairy.

Zinc

essential minerals and vitamins

What does it do: Zinc is good for the immune system, memory, healing, cognitive function, growth and development.

How to get it: Oysters, seafood, red meat and poultry have plenty of zinc but you can also get it from beans, nuts and whole grains. Deep RiverRock’s Revive and Relax is also a great way to increase your Zinc intake.
