Injuries reported as van crashes into crowd in Barcelona

It’s reported that at least two people have been killed and 0ver a dozen more injured after a van crashed into crowds in the Las Ramblas area of the city centre.

Police in Barcelona have said that several people were injured after a van crashed into crowds in the Las Ramblas area of the city centre but sources are reporting that at least two people have been killed.

A white van mounted the footpath and struck several people in the area in what police said was a “massive crash” and have described it as a “terrorist attack.”

Emergency services are urging everyone to stay away from the area around Placa Catalunya.

El Pais newspaper have said that the driver of the van fled on foot after the incident and reports are circulating that he and another man are armed and entrenched in a bar in the area.

Las Ramblas is a popular tourist area in Barcelona due to its market stalls, bars and restaurants.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said he is in contact with all authorities and the priority at the moment is to attend to the injured.

Aamer Anwar was walking down Las Ramblas when the incident happened, he told Sky News: “All of a sudden, I just sort of heard a crashing noise and the whole street just started to run, screaming. I saw a woman right next to me screaming for her kids.”
