Over a third of Irish students say they are in severe financial difficulty.
Nearly four in ten third-level students in Ireland say they are in severe financial difficulty, according to a study of student living conditions in the country.
Approximately 36% of 20,000 students in third-level institutions in Ireland reported having financial problems in Eurostudent VI, the sixth annual report on student living conditions due to be published today, January 22.
Third-level students in Ireland, the report reveals, have an average monthly income of €754 and average monthly expenditure of €832, a deficit of €78 per month.
40% of those monthly living costs are provided by someone other than the students themselves, usually a parent or a partner.
Not surprisingly, accommodation accounted for the largest chunk of students’ expenditure, accounting for over 4% of monthly costs, an average of €365 per month.
Average income has increased for the majority of third-level students (except postgraduate students) since the last Eurostudent report, Eurostudent V, in 2013, while the number of students attending third-level institutions has increased by 7.8% in that period.
