In a word, epic.
Given the massive success that Amazon has had since moving into the film business, it’s only logical that the studio will be looking to emulate that level of success on the small screen. Despite the fact they’ve financed and housed a variety of successful shows – The Man in High Castle, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Mozart in the Jungle and Sneaky Pete being fine examples – they’re still searching for that ‘massive’ hit.
This isn’t being critical of the shows they’ve made because their CEO, Jeff Bezos, has even said that he’s searching for a show that becomes a cultural phenomenon in the way that HBO’s Game of Thrones has.
After Amazon announced that they’ve plans to make a Lord of the Rings TV show, some people were slightly skeptical of that announcement because they’re already familiar with that story and they argued that the show would struggle to improve upon the films.
Well, if you’re a fan of epic TV shows you’ll be very pleased to know that Deadline have reported that Amazon are developing a slew of high-profile titles. They’re currently developing Stephen King’s The Dark Tower among other titles such as; Ringworld, Lazarus, Snow Crash and Iain M. Banks’ classic sci-fi series, Culture.
This being said, they’re also developing a series of books that have the potential to dwarf the scale, scope and narrative complexity that defines Game of Thrones, Robert Jordan’s beloved series, The Wheel of Time.
It’s impossible to define the themes, ideologies and plot details that runs throughout Jordan’s epic 14-book series but in simple terms, Wheel of Time follows a young man and his group of friends who are forced out of their quiet village into a world beyond their imagination.
Since its debut in 1990, the series has become one of the most popular fantasy series of all time and if Amazon can capture the brilliance of the books, TV fans are in for a treat.
As for The Dark Tower, Stephen King fans will be hoping that the TV adaptation is infinitely better than last year’s film.
