With Storm Hector approaching, here’s what the weather will look like this week

Batten down the hatches because wind gusts of 125km/h are expected in some areas.

As stated previously, there are various weather warnings in place as Storm Hector looks set to hit Ireland tonight.

Wind gusts of 125km/h (75mph) are expected along the west coast. Gusts up to 95km/h (60mph) are also possible in exposed areas inland.

With regards to the specific warnings, there are two wind warnings in place. There’s a Status Orange wind warning for the following counties; Donegal, Galway, Mayo, and Sligo. There’s a Status Yellow wind warning for Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, Clare and Kerry.

This morning will see outbreaks of rain in western areas that will gradually spread to the rest of the country during the day, with the rain more persistent in Atlantic coastal counties by evening.

This rainfall will become increasingly windy and gusty, with strengthening south to southwest winds. Highs of 15 to 19 degrees, warmest in the east and southeast.

As for this evening, conditions are expected to be wet and windy. The winds will become very strong later in the night as they change direction to westerly with the rain turning more to showers. Lows of 10 to 13 degrees.

It’s expected to be very showery on Thursday with strong and gusty westerly winds at first. The winds will gradually ease through the day and the showers will become more scattered.

With regards to Friday, the conditions should ease off with a dry to start to the day with sunshine in many parts of the country. However outbreaks of rain will develop through the day as cloud increases across Connacht, Ulster and west-Munster; the east and south will remain dry until late afternoon /evening. Heavier rain will extend nationwide overnight.

Moving into the weekend and there’s going to be a wet start on Saturday morning for many parts of the country. A gradual improvement will occur throughout the day with the skies slowly brightening. However the rain may not clear some eastern counties until near evening.

The majority of places on Sunday should be dry and bright for the day, but increasing cloud along western coastal counties will bring outbreaks of rain in the afternoon /evening.
