Derry City to rename stadium after late Ryan McBride

Ryan McBride

A very fitting tribute.

Derry City FC will rename its Brandywell stadium in honour of the club’s late former captain Ryan McBride.

McBride died suddenly in March 2017, at the age of 27.

On Thursday, Derry councillors voted unanimously in favour of renaming the stadium after a long period of public consultation, that saw 71% of the public respondents say that they were in favour of renaming the stadium to honour McBride. The consultation received a total of 6,549 responses, and closed in July.

The decision to call it the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium will have to be fully ratified by Derry City and Strabane District Council, but looks very likely to go through.

Derry City currently sit at sixth place in the League of Ireland.
