And that’s the end of that chapter.
The Irish public has voted overwhelmingly to remove the reference to blasphemy from the Constitution.
With all the votes tallied from all 40 constituencies, the final result is as follows:
YES: 64.8% – 951, 650 votes
NO: 35.1% – 515, 808 votes
22,236 invalid ballot papers were confirmed in total.
The news was confirmed shortly after 11pm on Saturday night.
It follows the re-election of President Michael D. Higgins, which was officially confirmed a few hours beforehand on what was a busy and historic day for the nation.
President Higgins gave a spirited victory speech in which he looked to a brighter future for Ireland.
“I will represent, on your behalf, an Ireland committed to a peaceful world,” he concluded.
A short time later, the results of the blasphemy law referendum arrived following the conclusion of the tally at Dublin Castle.
The 37th Amendment has been officially approved by the people of Ireland.
