Much like Mr. Randy Watson and his iconic band, Sexual Chocolate, plenty of people have been wondering about Coming to America’s main character, Prince Akeem, after he married Lisa and headed home to Zamunda.
We’d like to think that he misses Queens and that shit hole of an apartment that he used to live in – we always loved the landlord’s delivery of the line “Hey Stu, your rent’s due, motherfucker! Now don’t be pulling that falling down the stairs shit on me again, you hear! – and now that he’s married, we suspect that ‘the royal penis’ won’t be cleaned by those female maidens anymore.
Anyway, the rumours about a sequel to the beloved comedy have circulated for years but the ball is finally rolling on Coming to America 2.
Deadline have reported that Paramount Pictures have lined up Craig Brewer (Empire, Black Snake Moan, My Name Is Dolemite) to direct the film and Eddie Murphy will reprise his role as Akeem.
Kenya Barris is rewriting the script that was penned by the original Coming to America writers, Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield.
As for the plot, we’re told that “Akeem learns about a long lost son, and must return to America to meet his unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda.”
The same report also states that the producers are planning on bringing back Arsenio Hall (Semmi), Shari Headley (Lisa McDowell), John Amos, (Lisa’s father) and James Earl Jones ( the king of Zamunda). As of yet, nothing official has been confirmed regarding casting – aside from Eddie Murphy’s return.
“After many years of anticipation, I’m thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward. We’ve assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on Dolemite, and I’m looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen,” said Eddie Murphy in a statement.
