Police in Derry are at the scene of a security alert

Police are working on making the scene safe.

Police in Derry are currently at the scene of a security alert in the Circular Road area of the city.

A white Ford Transit was reportedly hijacked in the area shortly after 11.30am on Monday by three masked men who threw an object into the back before abandoning the vehicle.

A number of homes have been evacuated in the Circular Road area of Derrydue to an ongoing security alert.

Commenting on the incident, Superintendent Gordon McCalmont said: “We are now putting in place cordons in the area, and we anticipate significant disruption to the local community while we work to the make the scene safe.

“We understand the effect this will have on the local community, but we will not take any chances when it comes to keeping people safe.

“I know this security alert will cause significant disruption to many people, but we will not take any chances and we have no option but to take these measures in order to keep people safe.

“This is the last thing the people of the City need, or want, but I want to reassure people we are doing all we can to minimise disruption.”
