Met Éireann has updated a Status Orange weather warning to include Mayo.
The wind warning, which will remain in place until midday today, originally pertained solely to Donegal. Thanks a combination of factors – including waves, spring tides and surge – both counties are at risk of coastal flooding.
A second warning has also been expanded to include Wicklow. The Status Yellow warning had originally encompassed 11 other counties: Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Dublin, Louth, Meath, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo and Clare.
The status yellow warning will remain in effect until 6pm today (12 March).
Met Éireann has advised that “southwest winds veering west to northwest will reach mean wind speeds of 50 to 65km/h and gusts of 80 to 110km/h,” leading to circumstances that could also result in coastal flooding, particularly on the western and northwestern coastlines.
A Status Orange marine warning has also been issued, as west to southwest winds will reach gale force 8 or strong gale force 9 today on all Irish Coastal Waters and on the Irish Sea.
Winds will occasionally reach storm force 10 this morning on Irish Coastal Waters from Slyne Head to Erris Head to Malin Head.
