It’s Sunday.
Let’s check out what movies are on offer today and tonight for those of you plonked in front of the TV.
There’s a few decent options.
The Spy Who Loved Me – RTÉ2 – 6pm
Has one of the best henchmen of the franchise; Jaws.
The Imitation Game – Film4 – 6.45pm
The true story of the breaking of the Enigma code.
Tomb Raider – UTV – 7.50pm
Alicia Vikander takes over the role of Lara Croft and creates a far different character than her predecessor, Angelina Jolie.
The Jerk – Sky Comedy – 8.10pm
The Guardian ranked this as the 24th best comedy movie of all time back in 2010.
Steve Martin stars.
The Cold Blue – Sky Documentaries – 7.55pm
An inside look at the life and deadly missions of World War II’s Eighth Air Force and meditation on youth and trauma, with contemporary footage from the National Archives.
100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
All The Money In The World – Channel 4 – 9pm
A crime drama directed Ridley Scott and starring Mark Wahlberg.
A good movie which is even more extraordinary considering Scott, disgusted by the allegations levelled against Kevin Spacey, removed him and replaced him at the very last minute with Christopher Plummer. It required a lot of reshoots considering the movie was essentially finished but Plummer is truly outstanding in the role.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back – Film4 – 9pm
The first movie fell into the same category as Shooter for me. It’s been on so many times but I’d still stop and watch various scenes over and over again.
Never Go Back was far more forgettable.
Meet The Fockers – Sky One – 9.30pm
There’s definitely an audience for these movies, but I’m not it. Teen movie-like levels of sheer stomach-churning awkwardness.
Role Models – ITV4 – 11pm
The best description of this movie came from Stephen Holden in The New York Times, who said: “Judd Apatow neither wrote nor directed Role Models. But he might as well have.”
LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
