Ferrell, Rudd, Kathryn Hahn and Billy Joel – the show’s teaser really has it all.
Anchorman stars Will Farrell and Paul Rudd are reuniting for new Apple TV+ series The Shrink Next Door.
Inspired by true events and based on a podcast, the series details the bizarre relationship between a psychiatrist to the stars (Paul Rudd) and his longtime patient (Will Ferrell).
Over the course of their relationship, the all-too-charming psychiatrist slowly inserts himself into his patient’s life, even moving into his Hamptons home.
The synopsis from Apple TV+ reads: “The series explores how a seemingly normal doctor-patient dynamic morphs into an exploitative relationship filled with manipulation, power grabs, and dysfunction at its finest.”
You may read that premise and think it sounds more like a thriller than a comedy and indeed, there are not many belly laughs to be had in the first teaser for the show.
That said, casting such naturally funny people as Ferrell and Rudd – as well as Kathryn Hahn (WandaVision) and Casey Wilson (Happy Endings) – suggests there will a heaping of dark comedy amongst the thriller elements.
