Light aircraft crash

Very sad news.

Two people have died following a light aircraft crash that took place in Northern Ireland on Tuesday evening, 19 July.

The incident occurred at Newtownards Airport.

According to RTÉ News, emergency services in the area were alerted just after 8.20pm.

Northern Ireland Ambulance Service [NIAS] personnel subsequently attended the scene alongside Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service and Police Service of Northern Ireland [PSNI] officials.

“NIAS despatched two emergency crews, a doctor and an ambulance officer to the incident,” it said in a statement. “No patients were taken from the scene.”

The scene at Newtownards Airport was closed off to the public.

Speaking on RTÉ Morning Ireland on Wednesday, Alliance Party councillor Victoria Moore said that the local community was in shock following the tragic incident.

“The airport here is part of the community,” Moore said. “It’s been here a long time.”
