Dragon’s Den star Alison Cowzer says employers need to pitch to candidates now more than ever

Louise Carroll

On the hunt for talent?

Businesswoman and co-founder of the hugely successful Louth-based East Coast Bakehouse, Alison Cowzer, joined us for our first-ever All In LIVE show this week.

Speaking about the importance of hiring the right team for your business, the biscuit maker recalled a time in the past where she received a very broad range of applicants for a career opening she had posted online. Alison said:

“…none of them really, not even one, was fitting the brief.

“…interestingly, the conversation with the recruitment agency was as much about, now, when you get people in to do the interviews, you have to understand that you’re interviewing them, but they’re interviewing you, because the talent deficit that’s out there at the moment is that you will not have a broad bank of people to talk to who are desperate to work for you.”

Alison, who is the company’s marketing and innovation director spoke about how important it is for employers to ensure any role is as satisfying for the candidate as it will be for the business owner.

“How do you work into the job elements that everybody can walk out of the office after a full day’s work and feel that everybody’s got something out of it, as opposed to just being there and earning a crust?”
