Sony’s latest video games console, the PS4, has helped the company sell more consoles in the past year than gaming godfathers, Nintendo.

It might be a tad surprising to hear the news that Sony is only now out selling Nintendo’s consoles, considering business for the Japanese gaming giants has been in decline over the past three or so years, however, it is true Sony has only now surpassed Nintendo in consoles sales.

According to the Japanese business news outlet Nikkei, Sony sold roughly 18.7 million consoles in the last financial year, whereas Nintendo sold just 16.31 million. That’s a 31% drop for Nintendo from the year before. Ouch…

Sony can thank their best-selling next-gen console, the PS4, for the latest boost in sales, while Nintendo will have to rethink their sales strategy for the Wii U as demand hasn’t been anywhere near that of the original Wii console.
