The mobile operator Three has been given the go ahead for a €780m takeover deal of O2 Ireland and according to Three CEO Robert Finnegan, the company aims to create one “super network” across Ireland.
Two of Ireland biggest mobile operators will get set to combine as Hutchison Whampoa’s Three has (
finally) been given the go ahead for a €780m take over of Telefonica's Irish O2 operations by the European Commission.
However, the new deal comes with a few conditions, mainly, Three Ireland will now have to facilitate two new mobile competitors in the Irish market. Three will also have to improve their terms for network sharing before the deal can be finalised.
O2 customers are probably wondering what’s going to happen now. Well, according to the
Three.ie website, “Nothing changes”. Here’s a look at the brief statement which currently appears on the
Three website:
“You don't need to do anything. Everything continues as normal for all Three & O2 customers. There’s no change to your account, customer service, billing cycle, bill payments or how you top up. We will continue to update you over the coming days and weeks once the transaction is complete.”

Speaking following this morning's announcement, Three CEO Robert Finnegan said: "With the combined strengths of the two businesses, Three will have the scale and financial strength necessary to compete more aggressively against the number one in the market.
“This leaves Three optimally positioned to become the number one player by providing the best value and service to our customers. We can now invest significantly in building a state-of-the-art 4G network, delivering very real benefits to customers in urban and rural areas throughout the country."
