Farmer, 60s, due in court after alleged attempt to hit Micheál Martin

The man attempted to hit the Taoiseach at the Ploughing Championships.

It is alleged the man, a farmer, was attempting to confront Taoiseach Micheál Martin and later tried to punch him.

Gardai confirmed the man in his sixties was arrested under the Public Order Act shortly afternoon has since been charged and released to appear before court at a later date.

There were no injuries resulting from the incident.

A spokesperson said: “A male in his 60s was arrested under the Public Order Act shortly after 12:00pm on Tuesday 15th September 2026, following an incident at a public event in Screggan, Tullamore, Co. Offaly.

“No one was injured. He was brought to a Garda Station in County Offaly and has since been charged and released to appear before a sitting of the District Court at a later date.

“Investigations are ongoing.”

The Taoiseach's office has been contacted for comment.
