Gardai were investigating dissident republican activity and the car is believed to have been headed to the north.
Following the vehicle stop, An Garda Síochána requested assistance from the Irish Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.
The EOD team completed an examination of the vehicle and made the device safe.
The official outcome is not being released for operational reasons.
A female in her twenties, the driver of the vehicle, was arrested.
A man in his forties has since been arrested in connection with the investigation, and is being held in Dublin.
Investigations ongoing.
