Irishman suffers a devastating fall in Guatemala; a fund has been set up to help him

Tony Cuddihy

An appeal is underway to help Irishman Eoin Sheehy, after a fall in Guatemala left him needing two emergency surgeries on his brain.

Eoin was travelling with friends when he had a bad fall while hiking.

Unfortunately, he hit his head and, having been left unconscious, he was so unwell that he had to undergo two emergency surgeries on his brain.

Eoin’s friend Colin O’Rourke told us: “The doctors say he is stable, but in a serious condition. We created a fund to support his family and to assist in funding his medical costs, which, being in Guatemala would be quite high.

“Eoin is one of my best friends and I know a lot of other people who could say that about him. He is a charming, friendly guy who is always up for having fun.”

Eoin’s brothers Brian and Paul revealed that he is getting stronger since his surgeries, but that he still has a long way to go.

“We, his two brothers, arrived here on Monday and he has shown steady improvement this week,” they wrote.

“It is a frustrating time for us all and more so for those sitting at home awaiting updates. Eoin is still in intensive care and his breathing is getting stronger.

“He has been stable since his two head surgeries. Every day we make the very short pilgrimage over to visit Eoin and only leave for sleep and food. We simply don’t know how we would’ve coped with this trauma without the support of his five loyal friends, Gary, Seán, Ciara, Fiona and Kate.

“Eoin is incredibly lucky to have such support around him. Guatemala doesn’t have an Irish Embassy but at times the waiting room of ICU Herrera Llerandi could certainly pass as one. The Irish embassy in Mexico has been of great assistance also.

“From the family, thanks to you all for your support, prayers and positive thoughts during this difficult time. Keep it going!”
