JOE catches up with Padraig Redfern for an update on how the Limerick man is fairing at Bootcamp as the weather takes a turn.

Name: Padraig Redfern

Age: 26

Location: Dromkeen, Co. Limerick

Weight: 88kg

Occupation: Field Sales Executive

How are things going since we chatted last, have you been making it along to the sessions?

I have indeed, I’ve only missed two since I started.

Are you doing similar types of stuff or is it getting tougher?

It had been fairly similar stuff but last night we did something different; we were doing boxing training. Obviously it was a lot of work on the arms and the upper-body, so I can feel that a bit today.

How was it, was it enjoyable?

Yeah, the hour flew by. It felt like more like a half-an-hour. Instead of just doing running and circuits, it livens up the routine, so to speak.

Have you noticed any difference in yourself in terms of your fitness, is it coming along?

Yeah, I’ve noticed with the running that I can keep going at a higher pace for a longer period of time. Also, I’ve a bit more energy in general from day-to-day.

Does it help with strength as well as with fitness?

It does. You notice it in the arms and you find you’re able to do more push-ups, for example. I’m able to do a lot more than I could when I started, so it’s getting into the routine of it and then you notice it week-on-week.

Are you edging up on the rest of the group?

Yes, in small little bits. In different sections, like in the shuttle runs, I would be a bit faster than I was when I started. If there are new people in the group I would be ahead of them because I have that experience of the extra few training sessions done.

How has the weather been affecting you?

It’s been okay, we really only had one bad night when it lashed last week for the whole hour. They have an easy way to get you into it – they make you roll around in the mud when you start so there’s no point in complaining because you’re wet from the off.

Does the weather make it thougher then?

It does, yeah. We train on Wednesday nights on a rugby pitch so with all the rain you notice that it’s a lot harder to run. Your legs would get tired a lot faster with the heavy ground and you slip a lot more.

So do you reckon you will stick it out through the winter months?

Hopefully. I don’t think I’ll have too many problems holding out.
