Get fit, look fit: Let’s talk training trousers

For when those hairy legs need hiding

Conor Heneghan

For when those hairy legs need hiding.

The populations of numerous countries with a warm climate have been horrified by the sight of pasty Irish legs for generations at this stage.

The reason those legs are so pasty, of course, is that barring summer holidays and the odd balmy 19 degree day at the beach in the summer, we’re not exactly fond of putting them out in the open.

We know we’re not about to change that attitude anytime soon so the least we can do is give readers a few tips on how to feel comfortable and look wowzers when working out in those trousers.*

*JOE would like to immediately apologise for writing that last sentence.

O’Neill’s Larch Skinny Pants (€38)

The mere mention of the word ‘skinny’ in relation to any item of clothing was considered blasphemous in the GAA up until recently, but thanks in no small part to O’Neills, our native games have certainly got with the times in recent years.

Skinny tracksuit pants remain a relatively new fad, but they are comfortable and incredibly practical in that they prevent the need for the age-old practise of sticking the bottom of your tracksuit pants into your socks on cold days.

Canterbury Core Logo Fleece Pants (€41)

These are probably more suitable for lounging around on days when you have no intention of leaving the house; your legs will rarely feel as warm and snug as they do in a pair of fleece pants.

They are, however, also suitable for working out indoors when required, as is often the case at this time of year when the mercury drops below zero.

adidas condivo14 training pants (€37)

Like the O’Neill’s skinnies above, you mightn’t wear these out and about for anything other than a quick trip down to the shop, but they’re perfect for wearing down at astroturf on a cold evening and are a nice alternative for those of you not comfortable wearing tights.

Asics Tracksuit Bottoms (€50)

If it’s pure performance tracksuit bottoms you’re after, Asics have you covered.

There’s nothing fancy looking about these bottoms but the fabric will keep you dry and comfortable if you’re out for a run on a wet day and there are enough pockets on the arse to keep your valuables safe.

Under Armour Men’s ArmourStorm® Rain Trousers (€92)

At €92 we’re talking the top end of the market, but if you’re a keen enough golfer that you don’t mind swinging clubs around in the rain for a few hours, you might as well be wearing the right gear.

100% waterproof but light and comfortable too, these will ensure that you’re nice and dry all the way to the 18th green, even if you spend as much time in the heavy rough as JOE does.
