Video: A look ahead to the First Fortnight Festival kicking off tomorrow

Documentary on mental health-related street art to premiere at First Fortnight Festival.

Eric Lalor

A specially-commissioned documentary on mental health-related street art will receive its premiere this Friday (January 2) as part of the First Fortnight Festival.

No More Secrets was directed by Aidan Kelly and Wissame Cherfi and follows the making of six street art pieces in Limerick, Letterkenny, Dublin and Portlaoise.

The pieces were created with the aim of challenging mental health stigma. The film was produced by First Fortnight and Mental Health Ireland.

Commenting on the production, Aidan Kelly said: “Taking mental health conversations out of the shadows and opening up the issue for discussion in our local communities may not always be easy, but it does help.

“With this in mind, First Fortnight set about engaging community groups by helping to create stunning works of art in towns across Ireland. Using street art, which was once dismissed as vandalism and pushed to the margins of society, we’ve set about asking; can this collaborative approach to art-making have a positive effect on our communities and society as a whole?”

Now in its sixth year, First Fortnight 2015 will see live music, film, theatre and visual arts events staged to create open discussion and understanding of mental health problems, and challenge prejudice and discrimination.
