JOE Gaming Weekly – We’ve got the release date for the new PS Plus service

Rory Cashin

The brand new game set within the universe of Dune is also released this week.

Welcome to JOE Gaming Weekly, your weekly round-up of all things gaming.

Or, specifically, the one big game you should play this week, the one big piece of gaming news you need to know about, and the one big deal available to purchase this week.

So, off we go!

MUST PLAY OF THE WEEK

Dune: Spice Wars

It is that time of year when all of the developers begin holding off on their releases because they assume everyone has started to go outside to play. The next BIG(ish) release is Evil Dead: The Game on 13 May, so it might be time to start expanding your gaming options, as well as diving into some older games that you might’ve missed first time around.

Thankfully, this week does come equipped with another BIG(ish) release, in the form of Dune: Spice Wars. Considering the movie was such a huge success in cinemas last year and the sequel is on the way, Dune is very much back in the cultural eyeline right now.

This real-time-strategy game is a closer adaptation of the books than the movies, with the spice-covered planet being coveted by four different factions, constantly making and breaking allegiances with each other, so it is up to you to know what to develop, where to place your bases, when to attack, what to retreat from… all the war general stuff you’d expect from an RTS, but matched with some very pretty visuals based on the Dune universe.

Dune: Spice Wars is available on Steam Early Access for PC from Friday, 26 April.

BIG NEWS OF THE WEEK

We have a release date for the new PS Plus service

As we reported back in March, PlayStation is bringing some big changes to their PS Plus services. The new version will be split into three different tiers, each costing a different amount per month/year, and each giving different levels of access to free monthly games, access to hundreds of games from the PS library (including games from the PS1 and PS2!), and a try-before-you-buy option for select new releases.

At the time, we didn’t know when this might be getting launched for players, but this week they revealed their “targeted” launch dates around the world:

  • Asia markets (excluding Japan) – targeting May 23
  • Japan – targeting June 1
  • Americas – targeting June 13
  • Europe – targeting June 22

For more info on what each of the different tiers will bring, check out the official statement via the PS Blog right here.

DEAL OF THE WEEK

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

If you liked Dark Souls or Elden Ring and thought to yourself, “Yes, this is good, but it could do with more Star Wars stuff in it”, then you’re in luck, because that is pretty much exactly what Fallen Order is.

Set five years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, you control a Jedi Padawan on the run throughout the universe from the Galactic Empire, attempting to complete your Jedi training while also rebuilding the almost-entirely-defeated Jedi Order.

Without a doubt one of the best Star Wars games of recent years, so if you’re a fan of all things set in a galaxy far, far away, then this is a must-own.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is available on Xbox One at Argos, marked down from €46.99 to just €10.99.
