Uncharted 5

This could be the first proper look at the return of one of the biggest games series of all time.

When Sony dropped a new advert for the PlayStation 5 – with the title ‘Live From PS5’, appearing like a live news report from within the worlds of several of the PS5’s biggest games – initially most gamers wouldn’t have batted an eyelid.

Within the 60-second spot, there was footage from already released games, such as Horizon Forbidden West, God Of War Ragnarok, Returnal and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, as well as soon-to-be-released titles like Spider-Man 2 and Final Fantasy XVI. But then, at 0.43, a glimpse of a game appears on screen, which doesn’t seem to match any other games either already released or announced…

The advert returns to this unnamed title several more times before ending, and the eagle-eyed out there are speculating that it is most likely to be Uncharted 5. Last week we reported that Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog and co-creator of the games series, stated that “For us, Uncharted was insanely successful – Uncharted 4 was one of our best selling games – and we’re able to put our final brushstroke on that story and say that we’re done. We’re moving on.”

However, that doesn’t mean that Sony couldn’t hand the franchise off to another developer, as they have done previously with Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection.

From the footage in the trailer, it does look like if this is Uncharted 5, then we’ll be playing as Cassie Drake, the daughter of Nathan, now all grown up and heading off on adventures of her own. Last we seen of her was at the end of Uncharted 4, when she discovered the truth behind her parents’ fortune. Additionally, the last entry in the Uncharted series was 2017’s The Lost Legacy, which was fronted by Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross, so having an Uncharted game not fronted by Nathan Drake isn’t already unheard of.

At the time of writing, there has been no official confirmation or denial as to what the footage from that game is actually from, so until then we’ll have to wait and see if Uncharted 5 is actually closer to reality than any of us realised.
