I believe I can fly…
It’s been seven years since Red Bull Flugtag took place on these shores but it will make a welcome return to Dun Laoghaire on Sunday, 20 May. To celebrate the return of this massive event, we want a team of five friends to enter the competition and represent JOE on the day.
The event will see teams from Ireland and abroad come to Dublin to launch their weird and wonderful flying contraptions from Dun Laoghaire pier. The winners will be judged on three criteria – distance, creativity of craft and showmanship.
It takes a special kind of person to want to create a flying machine and then launch it from a nine-metre high ramp into the waters below. Do you think you and your friends have what it takes? If so, you could be flying the flag for JOE.
What do you need for a team?
Each team will be made up of one pilot and ground crew. Have a think about the skills you’ll need to build the perfect flying machine.
Do you know a designer who has what it takes to design a machine that’ll soar majestically over the waters of Dun Laoghaire? Do you have someone with a bit of engineering nous who can tell you how to bring this design to life?
Who will be the mechanic who’ll make sure it’s all bolted together and which friend can bring that vital bit of showmanship to the table? Most importantly, which one of your mates has the balls to fly whatever you make off the edge of a nine-metre ramp?
Your pilot and crew also need to be able to swim, for obvious reasons..!
How can you join the JOE team?
If you want to fly the JOE colours on the day, you’ll need to impress us with an inspired design for a Red Bull Flugtag aircraft. Create an amazing design that includes the JOE logo and send it into us using the form below.
You’ll also need to tell us why you and your team deserve to represent JOE on the big stage! Tell us what roles your friends can play and what you can bring to the table as a team.
You’ll have four weeks to make your masterpiece and we’ll cover all the costs of construction. We’ll also provide you with a workspace in which to make it and cover every step of the journey with you.
Red Bull Flugtag is all about having a bit of craic but safety is a priority for the organisers. So helmets and life jackets will be given to participants and your flying machine will also need to be able to float.
With all that in mind, the only thing left to do is come up with something that can do us proud on the day. Or give us a laugh at least!
