A supermarket in Roscommon is selling 99s for 50 cent

Kate Demolder

The heroes we all deserve.

The rising price of 99s has been a bone of contention over the years in the history of Ireland.

The national treasure that is a 99 is deemed essential eating whenever the weather rises above 11 degrees, but often it seems like you’ve to take out a mortgage to afford one.

With reports of the soft ice cream cone costing as much as €2.50 in spots across the country, the humble 99 has been haemorrhaging popularity in recent years in favour of a cold snack that’s easier on the pocket.

However, fighting the good fight for snack foods everywhere is Duffys Supervalu, Ballaghaderreen.

The supermarket has taken it upon themselves to stop the madness and serve 99s for 50 cents a piece to the Roscommon masses.

In a recent Facebook post, the shop shared information of the ice cream deal along with pictures of happy customers.

And why wouldn’t they be delighted? They just bagged the deal of the millennium.

We’re wondering will someone be brazen enough to go all out and order something of this size in the Roscommon supermarket to get their money’s worth.

With the weather set to only get hotter over the next few days, and Wednesday forecast to be the hottest day this year so far, here’s hoping that other shops across the country will follow suit and drop the prices during a time when 99s should really be our breakfast, dinner and tea.
