Angelina Jolie praises Tipperary Peace Award winner Giles Duley

A peace award worth celebrating

Jolie, herself a long-time humanitarian campaigner, welcomed the recognition of Duley’s work in some of the world’s most dangerous conflict zones.

Duley was recognised for his work documenting the human cost of war and helping communities rebuild after conflict.

For more than 20 years he has travelled to some of the world’s most challenging conflict zones, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Ukraine, Rwanda, Lebanon, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In 2011, while working in Afghanistan, he was critically injured by an improvised explosive device.

The Tipperary Peace Convention was instituted in 1983 to “promote the concept of peace through music and discussion”, and each year issues its award to people who have “made a particularly noteworthy contribution to the peace-making process”.

Previous winners include former presidents Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese, Malala Yousafzai and Bob Geldof, as The Journal reported.
