Behind the wheel with Larry Gogan

Irish drivers have been listening to Larry Gogan in their cars for over four decades. But what's the man himself like behind the wheel?

JOE

2FM DJ Larry Gogan has been an institution on Irish airwaves since the 1960’s and continues to spin the hits at the ripe old age of 72, playing tunes from yesteryear on the Golden Hour at 3pm every weekday.

He’s been on the road as long as he’s been on the radio and shared his driving experiences with JOE, including an eventful trip to Tipperary in an Austin a40, his inability to change a wheel and dreaming of driving a Porsche with Marilyn Monroe.

What was your first car?

My first car was an Austin a40, a second hand saloon. One of my first journeys was to visit some in-laws in Tipperary and, not having a clue about the state of roads etc., I set off in the snow and slid all the way to Carrick-on-Suir. It wasn’t a great way to impress my future mother and father in law who were my passengers. I survived, however and had a great relationship with them afterwards

What made you choose your current set of wheels?

Simple really – I’m onto my fourth Amigo (Omega). The other three didn’t cause me any problems so why stop now!

What’s on your stereo?

At the moment on my stereo, I’ve U2’s greatest hits, Florence and the Machine and Mumford and Sons.

How nifty are you at changing a wheel?

I’m afraid I can’t change a wheel at all!

The perfect car with the perfect companion would be?

My favourite car would be a Porsche and the perfect companion would be Marilyn Monroe.

And your favourite drive?

I’d love someday to drive through France right down to the south of Spain, stopping along the way at little Bistros watching the world go by.

Obviously you’re a brilliant driver, but what trait in other drivers really grinds your gears?

I hate drivers who are up your backside all the time. The impatient ones who think they’ll never get to where they’re going quick enough.

Women can’t drive. Discuss.

I’ve no problems with women drivers except they’ll never let you out or give way to you. It seems to be in their make up!
