Dublin and Cork named as two of the gin capitals of the world

We’ll celebrate with a few G&Ts.

Dublin has been named as one of the top 10 gin capitals of the world, a new travel study has found.

The Gin Capitals of the World study was carried out by Flash Pack, a travel experience company who analysed over 3,600 uses of the most popular gin hashtags on Instagram, such as #Gin, #Ginlovers and #Ginoclock and found that both Dublin and Cork city are in love with the spirit.

The number one slot went to London, where over 46 distilleries have opened in the last year alone, while in 2016, it is estimated that £1million was forked out on gin on a daily basis in the UK capital.

Dublin tied for 10th with the Dutch city, Linne, while Cork city came 20th along with Florence, Vienna, Aachen and Los Angeles.

The Top 10 Gins Capitals of the World are:

  1. London, UK
  2. Berlin, Germany
  3. New York, USA
  4. Barcelona, Spain
  5. Broadbeach, Australia
  6. Melbourne, Australia / Edinburgh, UK
  7. Singapore, Asia
  8. Sao Paulo, Brazil
  9. Lapa, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil / Healesville, Australia
  10. Dublin, Ireland / Linne, Netherlands

The results were unexpected, co-founder of Flash Pack Lee Thompson admitted, saying: “It was surprising to see two Brazilian cities in the top 10 as we thought we’d see more American cities taking the top spots.”

On an Irish front, it was interesting to see Dublin beating out cities such as Milan (12th), Amsterdam (13th), and Tokyo (18th) while Cork managed to stand up next to the likes of Los Angeles in 20th place.
