Man legally changed gender to get cheaper car insurance and now he might be in a lot of trouble
That's one way of doing it...
There are a number of ways you can bring down the cost of your car insurance.
We have apps that track your driving, bringing down your costs if you're good behind the wheel.
You can also shop around looking for the best deal on the market.
Alternatively, you could just legally change your gender.
Seems extreme, but sure, we're not made of money.
A Canadian man recently legally changed his gender to avail of cheaper car insurance.
The man was originally quoted the equivalent of around €5,100 to insure his car for a year... which is outrageous.
He asked how much a woman would pay, and learned that it would cost around €1,230 less than what he was quoted.
So naturally, he went and became a woman - well on paper anyway.
He gained a letter from his doctor, filled in an application form and was sent his new female birth certificate.
Speaking to CBC in Canada the man (now woman) said: "I was quite shocked, but I was also relieved. I felt like I beat the system. I felt like I won. I did it for cheaper car insurance."
However, it might not be all good news.
An elected official in Canada said last week that the man has committed "perjury punishable in Canada by up to 14 years in prison."
All for the sake of cheap insurance...
