PIC: This story about a landlord and his Christmas gift to six students in Maynooth is wonderful

Paul Moore

We absolutely love this.

Christmas is a time of sharing and while it’s easy to get cynical about the commercial side of the holiday season, some stories can remind you about just how decent people can be.

As you will know, 2016 has been fairly grim when it comes to renting in Ireland, especially if you’re a student with a limited income. Rents are at their highest level in Ireland since records began and demand is at fever pitch.

All this without even mentioning the plethora of scams, legislative obstacles and inadequate facilities that are offered at extortionate prices.

The reality of being a student and looking to rent in Ireland might be enough to make you lose your faith in people and landlords, which is why we love this story that was sent into us by Mary Kelly, a student in Maynooth.

Mary shares her house with six other people and they recently received a wonderful present from their landlord.

She says: “We’re a house of six students in Maynooth. He (the landlord) was coming over to collect our December rent but he rang before to say that he had a small Christmas present for us, but not to get too excited as it wasn’t that big. Then, he lands in with all of this. He said just thanks for being good tenants and to have a takeaway on him. He left enough money to cover the food for a small army!  Then he said Merry Christmas and he was on his way, he’s the nicest landlord ever really.”

Mary says that her landlord wishes to remain anonymous because it “may cause a stampede of students wanting our house in September knowing how nice he is really!”

Here’s their Christmas hamper in in full which includes a few bottles of wine, some vodka, €100 spending money, cider and a box of beers.

What a gent.
