The desperate wait for the Irish summer.

The wait for an Irish summer can seem like something from a Samuel Beckett play. You sometimes have to wait until the schools go back in September to get an extended period of sunshine.

No matter how short the summer is, it’s easy to know when it finally arrives. It’s like there’s a change in the air and a collective euphoria grips the country. So what are the signs that give it away?

Well, we’re glad you asked.

1. People start complaining about the heat

It’s a fine line in Ireland. One minute people are moaning about the bad weather and then they’re using THAT line.

“It’s nearly too warm…”

2. Everyone goes outside to eat, drink or just hang out

Who knew there were so many people? We suddenly get very European and sit out until late, even on a school night!

3. The sunburn pics start

You know the ones – the inevitable pictures of some poor sod looking like a mutated Billy Roll.

4. Someone buys everyone ice cream at work

And it’s like Christmas all over again. Except with sunshine. And ice-cream.

5. Fellas walk around with no tops on

They think they look like David Beckham but they usually look more like James Corden.

6. You ditch the jumpers/jackets

Irish summer

There’s nothing like the simple pleasure of leaving the house in just a t-shirt and knowing that you won’t get hypothermia later in the night.

7. People try to have BBQs

Even if the weather holds up, Irish people always seem a bit awkward around a BBQ. It’s like watching a visiting president give hurling a go.

8. People drive around in convertible cars

Irish summer

Convertible cars may be useless for 350-odd days a year in Ireland but their smug owners will always get their money’s worth when the sun shines.

9. It’s too warm to cook

Irish summer

Salads and takeaways are the order of the day. Although really you just want to climb into a bath of ice and eat ice cream for every meal.

10. Social media is full of sun pictures

Beaches, hill walking, beer gardens – it’s like a competition to see who’s making the most of good weather.
