The winners of the 2018 Huawei Creatives competition have officially been announced with this year’s overall award going to a Dublin photographer.

Now in its third year, the Instagram creative photography competition aimed at celebrating Ireland’s visual talent was run by ‘The Snapys’ with support from tech company Huawei, and managed to attract over 15,000 entries.

Divided into 13 categories, including travel, food, pets and action, this year’s overall winner is Dubliner, Pete Maguire (@shotbymaguire) for a shot he took of rowers on the River Liffey at sunrise.

Commenting on the news, Pete said: “I’m absolutely delighted to win. The photo was taken in January at sunrise. I originally went out to shoot Samuel Beckett Bridge at sunrise and noticed some rowers on the Liffey which I thought would make a good shot.

“I shot one crew first but the composition didn’t really work, and luckily enough I spotted a second crew coming along so I moved places. This one worked out, got some perfect light and some great leading lines from the boat shape and ripples from the oars and it made for a perfect shot.

“I’ve had a look at all the entries and I feel really honoured to have been chosen given the high standard of so many of the images.”

I’m only getting to enjoy this now as I’ve been playing football for the past couple of hours, but absolutely delighted (and still a bit shocked) to announce that I’ve won the @huaweimobileie #huaweicreatives competition! Still cannot believe it. Thanks for all the messages of congratulations and well wishes. I’m overwhelmed. There were so many amazing pictures and I’m really honoured to have been chosen as the winner! Massive thanks to everyone who voted to me and also the judges for selecting me. Absolutely mental!! Here’s the winning pic one more time ☺️ . . . . . . . #fujifilm_xseries #xt2 #loves_ireland #igtravel #discoverireland #wanderireland #visitdublin #ireland_gram #ig_ireland #lonelyplanet #ig_today #irish_daily #living_europe #insta_ireland #igersdublin #lovinireland #travelgram #loveireland #youririshadventure #joepic #yesireland #rawireland #irelandtravel #lovindublin #visitdublin #discoverdublin #rowingrelated

Commenting on this year’s competition, Zena Ross, Huawei Ireland’s Marketing Manager said:

“We set out this year with the aim of working with The Snapys to elevate the competition’s purpose and we have done that in spades. The creativity and passion that has come through on so many of the images is astounding.

“It was an unenviable task shortlisting and I’m thrilled that the creative community categories has allowed us to showcase so many. Huawei’s congratulations goes to all our category winners and of course to our overall winner Pete for his stunning shot.”
